Fritz Kolbe was a mid-level diplomat in the German Foreign Office in Berlin (Auswärtiges Amt) under Nazi Foreign Minster von Ribbentrop during World War II. Code-named George Wood, between 1943 and 1945 Kolbe used his position to smuggle top secret Nazi documents to Alan Dulles, then of the US Office of Strategic Services in Bern, Switzerland.

Dulles was later to become head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) partly as a consequence of recruiting Fritz Kolbe, who came to be seen by Allied leaders as the “prize intelligence source of the war”.
